Power Transmission

Power transmission requires torque and Nexen products provide torque in a wide variety of clutches, brakes, torque limiters and coupling products. Nexen air actuated products are more efficient and economical than electrically actuated products of the same size. Air, unlike electricity, does not generate heat during engagement. Less heat allows greater torque transmission and efficiency. Nexen’s simple designs are easy to use and maintain. When properly applied these products have a long service life making the cost of ownership much less than competitive products.

Friction Clutches (Single Plate)

Friction Clutches (Single Plate)

Single friction disc, self-adjusting clutches mount on driving or driven shafts. They handle transmitted horsepower ratings from fractional up to 25 horsepower with torque ratings to 5000 in-lbs. at 80 psi. These clutches have thermal capacities to 2.5 horsepower and maximum operating speeds up to 3600 rpm. Most are available with integral sheaves, pilot mount or coupling versions. This product group includes twelve imperial models and five metric models.

Tooth Clutches

Tooth Clutches

Multiple or single-position tooth clutches are positive engagement devices having open or nickel-plated, enclosed housings. Tooth clutch designs include a pilot-mount version (accepts sprockets or couplings), a flange mount version that connects to bearing supported devices and integral sprocket versions. Air engaged tooth clutches produce up to 60,000 in-lbs. torque. Spring engaged tooth clutches, with up to 72,000 in-lbs. torque, are the ultimate holding device. Single and double-flex couplings, specifically designed for high torque tooth clutches are used for inline shaft connections.

Multiple Disc Clutches

Multiple Disc Clutches

Multiple disc friction clutches produce high torque in a small package. Clutch models in this group have up to eight interfaces and torque ratings to 10,000 in-lbs. Pilot mount clutches accept pulleys or sprockets, flange mount versions are used on bearing supported devices. Integral sprocket mount clutches are available with single or double-single sprockets. Single and double-flex couplings, specifically designed for high torque clutches are used for inline shaft connections.

Dual Plate Clutches

Dual Plate Clutches

Air actuated, dual and quad faced elements are designed for heavy-duty applications requiring high torque and low inertia. Four sizes with static torque ratings up to 300,000 in-lbs. mount to bearing supported flywheels, pulleys and gears. Bore ranges up to 6.500 inches. Duel and Quad faced elements have a large heat sink capacity a thermal rating up to 15 horsepower.

Torque Limiters

Torque Limiters

A torque limiter protects mechanical equipment, or its work, from damage by mechanical overload. A torque limiter may limit the torque by slipping a friction plate clutch or disconnect the load entirely. The action of a torque limiter is useful to limit any damage to the machine or product due to mechanical failures or product jams in the machine. Torque limiters are typically installed on the output side of gear reducers to protect the gear set. See more at Design World Motion Control Tips Protecting Against Mechanical Overload Damage.

Friction Brakes

Friction Brakes

Friction brakes have a stationary pad (friction facing) and a rotating wear surface. Common configurations include drum brakes, caliper disc brake and shaft mounted brakes with an integral disc and rotor. Friction brakes provide controlled deceleration, stopping, holding, and tension control. Air and spring engaged versions are available in all brake configurations.

Clutch-Brake Combinations

Clutch-Brake Combinations

Conveniently packaged clutches and brakes for start and stop applications. Clutch-brake combinations have mounting features that make them adaptable to NEMA and IEC motor frames. All clutch-brakes operate on static air pressure.

Clutch and Brake Controls

Clutch and Brake Controls

Clutch and brake controls include 3-way valves, 4-way valves, 5-way valves, quick exhaust valves, exhaust mufflers, flow control valves, and adjustable flow control valves.

Clutch and Brake Accessories

Clutch and Brake Accessories

Clutch accessories include sheaves (pulleys) in multiple belt groove configurations, bushings to reduce bore diameters and flexible couplings with mounting adapters for inline shaft applications. Accessories for brakes include torque pin brackets, guards and bushings for bore reduction. Clutch-Brake combination accessories such as input units and foot mounts are used to create shaft-in/shaft-out products.

Power Transmission Facing and Repair Kits

Power Transmission Facing and Repair Kits

Nexen designs are simple and re-buildable. Kits containing common wear items, such as the O-ring seals, bearings, springs and friction facings are provided for the majority of products. These item numbers appear on the Bills of Materials, Assembly Drawings, Instruction Manuals, and the website's Products Parts List.
